The food drop had a bag of oatmeal, a bag of mixed fruit and nuts, a bottle of syrup, a large container of yogurt, and a bag of walnuts. My husband roasted the walnuts. Then he mixed the oatmeal, nuts, fruit, and a bit of the syrup together in a large bowl. He also added about a tablespoon of corn oil. Then he spread the mixture on a cookie sheet and baked it for 30 minutes at 300 degrees. Bam. Granola. The cost to us was the tablespoon of corn oil.
Granola is like making a soup or stew. There is no set recipe, just use what you have. When there is money to spend, I like to add toasted unsweetened coconut (we toast our own), about a tablespoon of brown sugar and I prefer pecans and almonds over walnuts.
I also like a Greek style yogurt. The food drops almost always have plain yogurt. We use a cheesecloth strainer to drain the yogurt overnight so that it is thicker and richer. The flavor is stronger. We use the whey that is strained out for baking.
